What is Parks?

If you haven't heard of this board game before, it's a stunning board game created to celebrate the US National Parks. It was created in partnership with the Fifty Nine Parks Print Series, which means the cards and artwork are a thing of beauty. The high quality components come in a well organised box with sturdy trays (designed by Game Trayz).

So, it's beautiful, but how does it play?

Gameplay seems simple at first glance but there's lots of different things to consider, making it more complex than it looks. Each player controls two hikers who move along a trail. There's various locations along the way which allow you to do the action on the location, including picking up tokens or a 'vista point' where you can take a photo and earn points.

The main objective of the game is to visit various parks, which you do at the end of the trail. Each park has a different points value and requirement. This means you need to pick up enough tokens along the trail to then visit a park at the end. Easier said than done, as you can't go to a location occupied by another hiker more than once. Add in some other complexities such as seasons and gear, and it's a lot to think about.

Stunning artwork, yes. Fun to play? Also yes!

How does this play with one player?

This is a great solo game! You go up against two park rangers who move alongside you on the trail. They pick up tokens from the weather along the way, which trigger events. There's a slight change with the game set up, but the main goal remains the same, to visit parks and gain the most points.

Parks plays best with other people, but as a solo game, it's a fun challenge and it's a nice option to have.
